The AIGA VT Design Resource Guide

Here’s the post to get us started!
Print Places
- GlyphX - The art department’s print center. You can get decent prints here, though it’s still small and thus somewhat limited in its offerings. You’re required to buy a token at the University Bookstore in order to pay for your prints.
- Professional Services - Located next to India Garden, across the street from Buffalo Wild Wings and VCD. This place is really hit or miss. Karen, the owner, has put a lot of effort into getting my prints right in the past, and didn’t charge me. I’ve heard a lot of complaints depicting the opposite experience, with multiple mistakes that you get charged for.
- FedexKinko’s - In Christiansburg. Overpriced, and sometimes pretty shitty. However, it’s open later than most print places and has a decent variety of print options.
- OfficeMax - In Christiansburg. I don’t know much about printing there, personally.
- University printers located in Burrus, Smyth, and Squires
InkJet Printers
- Epson Stylus 1400 and 1900 - The 1400 is my baaaaby and I’m pretty happy with it. Prints up to 13×19. I like having full control over my prints.
Places to Intern
- Innovation Space (formerly the New Media Center) - The technology lab in Torgerson.
- College Media Solutions - Based next to the Armory.
- Modea - By University Mall.
- New City Media - Ermm, I know embarrassingly little about this place, other than it’s produced a lot of sweet stuff.
- 16 Blocks Magazine - Arts & culture magazine based in Blacksburg.
- Mailtrust - They’re right above Quizno’s by University Mall and have a very young staff.
- UniRel publications - Next to the Armory
Art supplies/General supplies:
- Mish Mish (Main st)
- Michaels (Christiansburg)
- Target/Walmart (Christiansburg) (although Walmart got rid of its fabric section)
- Heavener’s (Next to N Main and Prices Fork, hardware)
- Jo-Ann Fabrics (Christiansburg)
- OfficeMax (sells paper, Christiansburg)
- Goodwill (Christiansburg)
- YMCA Thrift (N Main)
- School House Fabrics (Floyd)
These are categories and suggestions I could think of off the top of my head at 2:30AM. Duh, it’s not a comprehensive list, so make some suggestions and I’ll add them.

Mailtrust is looking for graphic design interns as well, they’re right above Quizno’s and have a very young staff.
Oooh, right. Totally forgot about them; now they’re added!
Print places: Burruss and Smyth, have print centers that a lot of the juniors used for magazine project and annual report. Uses laser printers, can do double-sided and bind, can’t bleed to edge. http://www.printing.vt.edu/copy/index.php
Also, there’s a new print place in Squires: http://www.printing.vt.edu/
places to intern:
Publications in UniRel. Don’t know too much about them but Julia and Alex F worked there last year. They’re located right next to the Armory. http://www.unirel.vt.edu/publications/
Art supplies/General supplies:
- Mish Mish (Main st)
- Michaels (Christiansburg)
- Target/Walmart (Christiansburg) (although Walmart got rid of its fabric section)
- Heavener’s (Next to N Main and Prices Fork, hardware)
- Jo-Ann Fabrics (Christiansburg)
- OfficeMax (sells paper, Christiansburg)
- Goodwill (Christiansburg)
- YMCA Thrift (N Main)
- School House Fabrics (Floyd, never been but Jill and Jenn went there a lot)
Kind of a general list, but I didn’t know some of these places existed for part of undergrad.
Thanks for post. Nice to see such good ideas.
