YESSSSS. Who’s up for some AIGA downtown hanging beforehand?
This was posted to the SOVA majors listserv recently. If you missed it the first time, here it is again!
Attention all students,
16 Blocks Magazine is the free print and online monthly based in Blacksburg that covers local arts and culture. We stand out for our variety of local content and our high quality graphic design. Last fall, we successfully worked with our first two graphic designer interns from Virginia Tech, and we are currently looking for new Field Study interns interested in a hands-on publishing intensive experience with the magazine for the spring of 2009.
We assign our design interns 4-12 pages to lay out over the course of a month. They will be provided with text, graphics, and photos and be expected to lay out the pages taking into account our style and branding while applying their own creative vision.
Successful VCD interns will be proficient in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Interns’ work will be published in print and online. We will also be delegating some of our advertising design contracts for a small stipend per ad.
We are also seeking multimedia specialist interns as we increase our presence on the web. Web interns will update and design pages using Wordpress and should also be proficient in IMovie and IPhoto. Our web-designer’s work with 16blocksmagazine.com was instrumental in his hiring by Rackspace, an award-winning company (Fortune, Inc. Magazine) which is recognized nationwide.
We look forward to hearing from qualified candidates who are interested in a Field Study placement with 16 Blocks Media.
Contact publisher Hart Fowler at 16blocksmagazine@gmail.com for more information. You will also need to fill out a Field Study form in the Armory front office.
Just got this in the mail from AIGA. Every year they put out a design annual that showcases some of the best work from the past year. Yet another reason to become a paid member of AIGA.
Hey everyone. It’s been a while and I hope you are all well.
Just wanted to share a nice opportunity with all of you. A friend of mine in the Richmond Ad Club just wrote me inviting the VT VisCom students to be a part of the 2008 Richmond Ad Club Show. It’s basically like the Addy Awards held in Roanoke and students are offered several FREE entries, so there’s no reason not to submit. It’s also a great opportunity to network with some Richmond ad folk. Would be great to see some VT students place in the VCU-dominated student section! Good luck to everyone!

Virginia Tech’s InnovationSpace (formerly known as the New Media Center) is looking for new employees starting in the spring semester!
Many of you have probably passed by the InnovationSpace in Torg 1140 or used it to check out equipment or work on multimedia projects. The ‘Space is a multimedia computer lab open to the students, faculty, and staff of Virginia Tech, as well as the local general public, with the mission of providing assistance through free and open access to software, hardware, and specially-trained staff. Working there helps you build your skill set with new media and allows you to share your wealth of knowledge. If you’re comfortable with the Adobe Suite, Final Cut, and/or HTML/CSS, then IS could totally use your help.
Employees start with a semester-long (unpaid) ‘internship’ in which they put in as few or as many hours as they’d like during the week as a training period; after that semester, you become a paid employee. You have access to Lynda.com and awesome equipment, have opportunities to help with cool projects that faculty are working on (ex: John Boyer is a frequent patron of IS), and get better at the software that we all have come to know and love.
For more information, go to http://www.is.vt.edu or feel free to shoot me an email (or ask Carter Reed, Tanicia Bethea, or Xiaoyi Zhong).
To apply for a position, go to http://www.is.vt.edu/contact. It’s preferable that you’ll be at Tech later than Spring ‘09.
As people around may or may not know, I’m a fan of Boogieburg. They’re a local group of DJ’s that play electronic, breaks, hip-hop, reggae, funk, etc.. it’s really hard to put a label on their genre, but I can tell you that people love it. It’s fun to dance to, they provide a safe atmosphere (no asshole frat guys harassing girls, no fights…), and in the past years they’ve seriously blown up. They’re sponsored by Scion now, have played all across the country and have tons of sick guest DJ’s visit who have played internationally.
The guys are all friendly and a couple are graphic designs/flash developers, so that’s even more reason to support them. Every other Thursday (so, this Thursday, 11/20) they play at Rivermill and there’s no cover. On the weekends they play a lot at Cabo and The Lantern. www.boogieburg.com for more info. I’m normally out as are a few others who knows what the hell is going on.
It would be cool to see a lot of you out there… dancing and drinking (more of the former, less of the later) is a GREAT way to get to know each other.
